How It All Began…
The Commonwealth Children’s Center was established by a group of state employees committed to providing on-site childcare for their children and the children of other public employees. The Corporation was formed in October of 1979, but it was not until 1982 that we secured legislation authorizing space in the McCormack Building. We began operating in January 1983 with one classroom of 8 preschoolers and were in great need of additional space due to the high demand for childcare. Over the years, we have expanded our program to include four additional classrooms for infants and toddlers thanks to the much-needed support of many state officials and outstanding fundraising efforts and volunteer hours of parents and staff.
The center owes a debt of gratitude to various entities whose support has been instrumental in its success. The Women's Legislative Caucus, the Division of Capital Asset Management, the Bureau of State Office Buildings, and the Office of Employee Relations have played pivotal roles in facilitating the center's growth and development. Additionally, the unwavering support from public-employee labor unions, as well as the generous donations and loans from committed parents and friends, have been indispensable in furthering the center's mission.
Today, the Commonwealth Children’s Center stands as a beacon of excellence in childcare, committed to providing high-quality and convenient services for both public and private sector families. We serve up to 52 children in five classrooms. With a steadfast commitment to continual enrichment and innovation, the center strives to set the standard for childcare excellence.
